Why One of Miami's Top Sustainability Leaders Joins Miami Affordable Magazine's Board

Miami Affordable Magazine is elated to welcome Barbara “Barbie” Garcia, a well-connected business professional, real estate advisor and sustainability market leader, to its Board of Directors.

Garcia is a dedicated community advocate whose career reflects a steadfast commitment to improving the environment while serving the people and communities around her.

Through her work in green building, environmental stewardship, and strategic communications, Garcia has earned a reputation for bringing people together to advance meaningful initiatives that create healthier, more resilient communities.

Billy Jean Louis, CEO & founder of Miami Affordable Magazine, said Garcia has a track record of being a leader and can help the nonprofit in the right direction.

"Garcia demonstrated her capabilities to be a terrific board member since day one," Jean Louis, who also serves as the editor-in-chief of the magazine, said. "She has already connected the magazine with staff of the University of Miami and allowed the magazine to participate in the school's Earth Day Event."

Miami Affordable Magazine is a digital nonprofit news magazine covering exclusively affordable housing and is billed the first of its kind in South Florida. The community-based publication is dedicated to making housing information accessible by offering free content and plans to expand coverage in Spanish and Haitian-Creole.

Born in Mexico and raised by Venezuelan parents, Garcia said she's a proud Latina. She hopes that her experience as an immigrant who grew up in Miami will serve her well in this position, she also said.

"My unique insight & connection to South Florida's Latin population leads directly to my compassionate approach when dealing with complex community challenges," Garcia said.

Recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in its Hispanic Voices in Green Building series, Garcia has been celebrated for her leadership, passion for sustainability, and dedication to mentoring future generations of professionals.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated with industry leaders, nonprofit organizations, and public stakeholders to promote sustainable practices, encourage innovation, and inspire positive environmental change.

Most recently, Garcia served as Communications Chair for ASHRAE Miami, where she played a key role in strengthening the chapter’s outreach, member engagement, and public presence. Her ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity and purpose has helped advance the organization’s mission while fostering stronger connections throughout South Florida’s building community.

Outside of her professional accomplishments, Garcia remains deeply committed to giving back. She continues to volunteer with The Caring Place, supporting programs that improve the lives of low-income and unhoused residents throughout Miami by connecting individuals and families with essential resources, compassion, and hope.

Garcia’s leadership skills make her an exceptional addition to the board, where her experience, vision, and dedication will help advance the organization’s mission and create a lasting, positive impact for years ahead.
